Packing for Thailand and Cambodia

There isn’t one perfect packing list that works for everyone.¬†Choosing the items you pack all depends on destinations, travel styles, and trip durations. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that you NEVER want to pack too much. Especially if you’re backpacking! I packed extremely light for my three week backpacking trip in Cambodia and Thailand. I had only ever packed a backpack for the wilderness, so packing for urban environments and nightlife definitely threw me off a bit. But in the end I was really happy with my system. I would bring the exact same things if I were backpacking for 4 months. The trick is to have your big pack in addition to a small “packs-into-itself” bag, where you can keep your valuables on you or fold away if necessary. Keep in mind that you will most certainly buy a few things to wear at the markets during your travels. Here is my packing list!

In a 35 Liter Backpack:

  • In One Medium Packing Cube:
    • 1 pair loose, lightweight sweats to wear on plane, buses, and conservative spaces.
    • 1 pair athletic shorts
    • 1 pair casual shorts
    • 2 tanks tops
    • 1 lightweight long-sleeve (or 3/4 sleeve) top for air conditioned travel and coverage in temples
    • 1 light sweatshirt (trains are freezing).
    • 1 beach cover up
    • 1 casual dress for evenings and dinners
  • In One Small packing Cube:
    • 2 bathings suits
    • 10 pairs of underwear (it’s easy to find washers)
    • 1 pair sleeping shorts
    • 1 low-impact sports bra
    • 1 normal bra
    • 1 unlined lace bralette
  • Shoes: (pack in a shower cap!)
    • 1 pair closed-toe slip on shoes for temples and motorbiking
    • 1 pair sandals you can hike in and get wet (teva originals)
    • 1 pair sandals that dress up or match local garb (optional)
  • Accessories:
    • Sunglasses with leash
    • Hat with brim
    • Shawl for temples and comfy travel
    • ***Leave jewelry and extra flare at home. It will just be a bother in the extremely hot weather and attract attention to you in the cities.

  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Mini hairbrush
  • Shampoo/conditioner
  • Face wash and Lotion
  • LOTS of Sunscreen & chapstick

  • Small Cross-Body Purse
  • Travel Microfiber Towel
  • Zip Lock Bags
  • Toilet Paper (many bathrooms don’t provide it)
  • Headlamp
  • Bug Spray
  • Medecine
  • Trash Bag to cover pack in case it rains

In A Secondary Small Bag:

Wallet & Passport
GoPro Camera & Accessories
Outlet Converter
Travel Skin Care Wipes (I highly recommend Adventuress Skincare! Game Changer!!!)
Playing Cards
Airplane Sleep Aids (inflatable neck pillow, eye mask, ear plugs, compression socks)
Healthy Snacks (I always bring PROBARS)
Hideaway bag for your cash

Items To Buy at Markets:

Thai Pants (The BEST! So comfy you will want to wear them every day)
Dress or Flowy Tanks
Woven Bags and Duffles (Use one at end of trip to carry home the items you bought)
Tablecloths and Scarves as Gifts
Beach Sarong/Cover-Up
