We’ve all had that impulse…driving on an empty stretch of road with the rare chance to drive like a race car driver. We drive our cars almost every single day, but when do we ever get to test the full capabilities of our beloved vehicles? Well, in Birmingham Alabama there is a raceway called Barber Motorsports Park, and therein exists a porsche-owner’s dream get-away. It’s called Porsche Sport Driving School. You don’t have to own a porsche to attend, but you’ll certainly want to by the time you leave!
I had the special opportunity to attend Porsche Sport Driving School with Oakley Women, where there were no speed limits, no traffic – just wide open raceway. Alongside triathlete, Jenny Fletcher, skier, Kristi Leskinen and ambassador Sarah Dussault, I learned to hone in on the art and science of high-performance driving. We were given full permission to test the cars at their limits, but we quickly found that the limits had less to do with the car, and more to do with our courage while turning corners at 110mph.
We experienced the full spectrum of performance driving technique drills, testing our heel and toe downshifting, handling skills on the skid pad, precision driving on the Autocross course, and how to negotiate a high speed race track. We even got to navigate an off road course in the Porsche Cayenne.
“It’s really is a comprehensive program,” said Jeff Purner, Manager of Operations for the PSDS. “It begins by honing in on the fundamentals and builds over the course of two days so that by the end of the program students are able to drive on a world-class road course with relative speed and confidence.”
“These courses are for everyone,” continued Jeff. “Whether you drive a pickup truck or a Porsche you’re going to take home some new skills that will make you a better, safer driver every day. But be forewarned you may get bitten by the bug. It is a very addictive sport.”
When everything was said and done, it was an incredible experience for the girls of Team OPP (Oakley Porsche Performance) who won the Autocross relay race at the end of program. However, the girls will confirm Jeff’s warning. Not only is the speed and style of driving addictive…so are the cars!
